An accidental release of Winamp Beta
Published on September 1, 2005 By Mithun Pal In iTunes

On August 30, 2005 Winamp 5.1 Beta 3 was available on the Winamp servers for download. It was just an accident though unexpected.

So far I know, the link was http://download.nullsoft.com/winamp/client/winamp51_pro.exe [No more available].

So, it was not clear to us that it was a beta release.

Later on CraigF, an Administrator, declared on Winamp forum that they had removed the file. He admitted that it was an accident and also declared that it would remain unsupported as it was in beta. According to him full release of Winamp 5.1 would take place very soon.

Anyway so far I know about the features included in Winamp 5.1 Pro is just like this:

- Play Music and Video Files

- Full Featured Media Library

- Integrated Internet Radio & TV

- Supports Modem and Classic Skins

- Tripped Out Visualizations

- Rip/Encode Music into MP3

- Burn CDs up to 48x

Changes in Winamp 5.1 Surround Edition:

New: CodingTechnologies AACPlus encoder

New: Grand Prize Winner of the Internet Surround Music Project

New: SHOUTcast Wire - A Media RSS Browser and Subscription Service

New: Predixis Smart Playlist Generator

New: AOL Radio featuring (((XM))) Free Sampler

New: CD Ripping now available at 8x in free version!

New: Microsoft WMA encoder

New: Over 200 new Milkdrop presets

Update: in_vorbis now returns bitrate in getextendedfileinfo

Fixed: WMA stuttery playback

Fixed: out_ds copy button on status tab now works all the time

Fixed: Much improved ripping and playback with Sonic engine

Fixed: Video window now resizable regardless of Sidecar

Fixed: Length of long mp3's now reported properly

Fixed: Silent install switch now works properly

Fixed: Simultaneous CD Playback and Ripping

• The Full version plays MP3s, AAC, WMA, and more; Compatible with Winamp 2 Plug-ins; Full Support for classic and modern skins; Plays Videos; has a Powerful Media Library; Browse Internet Radio & TV Stations; Integrated Internet Music Videos & Songs; Bundled Visualizations; and Burn & Rip CDs.

• The LITE version plays MP3s, AAC, WMA, and more. It is compatible with Winamp 2 Plug-ins and has full support for classic skins.

So, for all these we have to wait for its full release.

Yes, out now. Available here Link
[Size: 5.87MB]

But, it was an accident that instead of full version beta3 was available from the server. So, they called it back.

not much of a difference.
I only have 2.1 surround sound.
It is still having hissy fits when i open the playlist in a modern skin.

Actually I'm not getting Surround Sound at all, and I can't find anything in preferences to help, and the Help Section doesn't even seem to know what I'm talking about.

I don't find also. Also don't find any significant change.
What I observe that the installer of version 5.1 is 1MB larger than that of the previous version. Don't know why?

It doesn't have surround capability. The "Surround Edition" name is a play on the version number. 5.1 is a the typical setup for surround sound in a home and 5.1 happens to be the version number.
It may be possible with plug-ins to provide surround sound, but Winamp itself doesn't include it.

Actually, it's called Surround Edition because of the addition of the aacPlus encoder, which allows for more than 2 sound channels as I understand.
on Sep 07, 2005
Yeah, it comes with an .aac demo, which sounds like crap on my system, presumably because I'm not set up for surround sound.

Sounds cool on a 5.1 system, but Winamp then crashes once it's done playing.    Now if only there were more surround content to listen to....
on Sep 08, 2005
WinAMP and crashing... I read that allot. I notice it crashes on me but only after playing it for like 4 hours straight in the moern skin mode.

I guess if your going to have a party, you better use it in classic mode.
on Sep 08, 2005
It's one of my most used apps, and in modern skin mode, and I don't recall the last time it crashed.

So for me also.
