The second preview of Opera 9 is scheduled to be released on February 7, 2006, which will include BitTorrent and widgets support, said Daniel Goldman at Opera Watch.

Opera 9 integrates BitTorrent

Opera has teamed up with BitTorrent Inc. to include the BitTorrent protocol in the upcoming version of the Opera Web browser.

BitTorrent's technology will be made available to users of the Opera browser in two ways: first, users can search for torrent files in the Opera browser's integrated search field (the search will be done by BitTorrent.com's engine), and second, when a torrent file has been selected, Opera's Transfer Manager feature will handle the download.

Opera was the first mass-market browser to implement BitTorrent technology. In July of 2005, Opera released a preview version of its browser containing BitTorrent support, as first reported by Opera Watch.

Opera decided to add BitTorrent support during the release of Opera 8 last year. The massive response, with more than 100 downloads per second, dealt a technical knockout to Opera's servers.

With the BitTorrent addition to the Opera browser, it is still has the smallest download file size of all other major browsers. The BitTorrent support has only added another 24KB to the file size.

Opera 9 to add tab thumbnail images

According to Daniel Goldman, the unreleased Opera 9, currently in development, contains a new hover feature. When hovering over a tab, a thumbnail image of the tab (page/window) content is shown (see screenshot below).

Internet Explorer's (IE) latest preview release contains a similar feature, however, IE doesn't show the thumbnail image when hovering over the tab, it only displays the thumbnails of all open tabs in a single window.

Opera 9 will support Widgets

Back in November there was speculation that Opera 9 will add widget support. At that time (and now) an Opera spokesman wouldn't confirm anything to Opera Watch. However, multiple sources familiar with the development of Opera 9 have confirmed to me that Opera 9 will in fact have Widget support.

It's not entirely clear to me whether the widgets, which are small programs that use Opera's rendering engine, will run in the browser (sort of like Firefox's extensions) or whether they can also be run on the user's desktop outside of the browser. From the screenshots (see one of them below) that I have seen, it appears that the widgets will run inside of the Opera browser.

Is widgets Opera's answer to Firefox's popular extensions?

Just remember that a Technical Preview, like a Beta, is not a Final version. http://snapshot.opera.com/
A quite recently released Final version, Opera 8.51, is available (free) on this page http://www.opera.com/download/

I'm going for TP2, though

I've been using the first preview of Opera 9 since it was released, and have had no troubles. I'm looking forward to trying preview 2. Widgets sound very interesting. Thanks for the heads up.

cool!

Thanks Koasati -- I should have been more clear. I have not had any trouble with Technical Preview 1, either-- posted comment #1 just to be sure everyone realizes Opera 9, TP2 is not a final release.

TP2-- can't wait...

Opera 9 is out

Overview

Screenshot: Widgets

Opera Widgets - Widgets are small AJAX applications that provide specific functionality - like getting your favorite news, converting currency and so on. Opera Lab has posted documentation on Opera Widgets - not only how to use them but also how to make them. Go to My Opera Community to download Widgets.

Screenshot: BitTorrent

BitTorrent - BitTorrent has become one of the most popular file transfer protocols around. Opera Lab has built it right into the browser so you can download torrent files easily. No more hassle finding the right port, no worries about setting upload and download speed.

Screenshot: Create search

Customize your search engines - Use your favorite search engine in the search box. Go to the site you want and right click on the search field site and click on the search field. You will then be prompted to "create search".

Screenshot: Block content

Improved content blocker - Cosmetic surgery for Web pages. Just right click on a page and select "block content". Any content not greyed out can be blocked with a click. Select "done" and see the page the way you want.

Screenshot: Block pop-ups

Improved pop-up blocker - Just try it with some nasty popups. Opera Lab has added more intelligence to help weed out even more pop-ups. But since not all pop-ups are created equal, use the trash can to retrieve pop-ups you may want.

Screenshot: Site preferences

Site specific preferences - For those of you who want to control settings for specific pages. Want to accept some cookies and deny others? How about setting your own style sheet to make the site more accessible? Just right click on the page and select "Site preferences".

Screenshot: Thumbnail preview

Thumbmail preview - Opera conserves system resources and uses less memory than other browsers so it's easy to have many tabs open at once. But just what tab had that video you wanted? Using the thumbnail feature, you can find out by resting the mouse on any tab.

As with any of our technology previews, this is not meant to replace your current version of Opera.

It's a great release. Not entirely sure about the widgets as they stand. Prefer AveDesk, but I am sure they will come into their own with extensibility.

Bittorrent support works very well (if a little slow to verify files currently) and AJAX sites like Live.com work fine now. Good news all round.

It's really nice Koasati. I'm also thinking to make one.

I'm now using the TP 2 of the Opera browser. It's really nice, working fine.
One improvement already I've noticed - the e-paper which Opera 8.51 couldn't open properly, with Opera 9 TP 2 I've just read it. Though it was unable to show all the option properly, still no problem found to view the complete e-paper of today.

The reason why I'm saying Opera 9 beta 2 could not open the e-paper properly is here:

Look at the screenshot of Firefox:

Times of India on Firefox

Look at the marked area of the page. It's showing an option 'Page Size' which is absent in the following shot of Opera 9 TP 2:

Have you downloaded it? Are you using it? Are you facing any problem?

I tried it but Opera really doesn't impress me.  It displayed several errors on these forums.

I'm using it. All configs updated. No problems on this forum...
